Tips to draw fast

In a draw-and-guess game, success is not about drawing best but about making the word easy to guess quickly. These tips work whether you draw like an artist or your people look like stick figures.

Start with the big shape

The overall outline is recognized before any detail. For "elephant", the body and trunk first; ears and eyes later. Guessers start typing as soon as they see the silhouette.

Draw the context, not just the thing

A "lighthouse" on its own is just a tower. With the sea, some waves and a beam of light, it is a lighthouse in two seconds. For ambiguous objects, draw where they are or what they are for.

Use color on purpose

Color is a free clue: yellow for the sun, red for a tomato, blue for water. When in doubt, draw in black and add a touch of color only where it helps.

Actions need a scene

For "swimming" or "sleeping", a person is not enough: add the water or the bed. A simple scene says more than a detailed figure.

Compound words: piece by piece

"Snowman" is three balls and a carrot. "Fire truck" is a truck, a ladder and a hose. If the word has two ideas, draw both.

Watch what they type

Wrong guesses show up on screen. If someone types "horse" and the word is "unicorn", you know what is missing: the horn. Fix it as you go instead of starting over.

Stuck? Clear and simplify

You have undo and clear. A tangled drawing confuses more than one with three strokes. And if you drew an impossible word, remember the first letter hint arrives halfway through.
